TIPS TO BUYING AT AUCTION-HOW TO GET THE BEST DEAL
April 10, 2007
Auctions can be great fun to attend. You can get in on the bidding or just
watch the action. But, before you start bidding, make sure you know how
to get the best buy. Keep these tips in mind at your next auction.
1. Start By Observing
One of the best ways to learn is by observation. Attend a couple of
auctions with the intention to simply watch and learn. You’ll get the feel
for how things work and be prepared to avoid costly mistakes.
2. Attend the Preview
The preview can be held a few days before the auction or just a few hours
before the auction begins. It is open to the public and free of charge.
This is your chance to look items over thoroughly and to get up close to
see any damage or problems with an item.
3. Be Prepared
Know what you are looking at. Here’s where reference books and price
guides and the internet come in handy. Doing the legwork before hand,
increases the likelihood that you will pay a fair price at auction. Not
doing so, can lead to disaster.
4. Learn the Terminology

TIPS FOR SELLING EXPENSIVE COLLECTIBLES ON EBAY
April 10, 2007
Recently, a friend asked me to help her brother sell his collection on
Lladro glass figurines on eBay. These are expensive glass collectibles and
I knew nothing about them - but I don't have to. The principles for
selling expensive collectibles on eBay are the same, regardless of what is
being sold.
Obviously, like any eBay auction, the seller must have a powerful listing
with great pictures. This is always true regardless of what the

set that price as a reserve. Then make your opening bid absurdly low -
yes, absurdly.
Example: if you will accept $1,000 - make your opening bid $25. There is
no risk in this, because you don't have to sell unless the bidding reaches
$1000, but the low price attracts buyers, (assuming there is demand, of
course).
Looking at completed eBay auctions allows us to track prices, Again and
again we learn that starting the price where the seller hopes it will end
is not a wise tactic.
For instance, a seller wants to get $750 for his figurine. An...

POSTMORTEN PHOTOS.
April 8, 2007
The first time I looked at a post mortem photo was when I was a little child and saw it in a photo album of my grandparents. Hidden behind a family photo was a photo of a little baby in a casket taken around the 1930's. Post mortem photography was very common in the 19th century because death was a part of every days life and specially the child mortality rate was very high.. Often it was the only photo taken of a child. When a child had passed away the photographer was called to the house or the child was brought to the studio. Every effort was made to let the child look asleep in bed or couch or even look alive and posed sitting in a chair. The child, dressed in a nice dress or outfit, was often accompanied by a toy, doll, flowers and sometimes a dog. In some cases the photographer was asked to paint open eyes over the closed eyes. Now we can think of it as morbid but all of this was done with much love and respect for the deceased and this last memento was a way of dealing with... |
